Take control of Issac Clark once more and dismember hoards of Necromorphs to uncover the mysteries of the Unitology Cult and the Marker. (http://www.the2bitgamers.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/dead-space-2-isaac.jpg) Did you really think that Issac Clark was dead?  No way baby!  After a head-trip of an ending to the first game, Dead Space 2 continues soon after with Issac getting a little psych evaluation for his post traumatic stress disorder.  However we see that he's not doing so well and is still haunted with visions of his dead girlfriend, Nicole.  If that wasn't enough the story cuts right to a  mental ward that's in chaos.  It looks like Issac has been living in a padded room in a straight jacket  for the past 3 years.  From there the game does not let up.  Spending most of the first level stuck in a jacket unable to to use your arms, Visceral has taken the survival in survival horror to new heights.  With the help of a mysterious woman and her promise to cure Issac of his visions, he gets some makeshift gear together and attempts to escape from his prison... that is until the truth comes out.  He's stuck on the Jupiter moon of Titan and he's not the only thing that's there, the cult of Unitology and the Marker have also made a home there.  Now the moon is overrun with necromorphs  and it's up to Issac to set things right.  There is a lot more to the story then that but I'm not inclined to say anymore. This is a game all about experiencing it, and me telling too much of the story will just lessen it's effect. Dead Space 2 has taken an entirely different approach to it's story telling this time around.  Now Issac Clark is fully voiced which is a huge departure from the silent protagonist in the first game.  I really wanted this to happen and for the most part I really liked it,  however I also missed the silent character from the first game.  Chalk it up to "the grass is always greener", but having someone that doesn't speak adds to the mystique and tension as you empathizes how he feels, experiencing the revelations and surprises with him.  I also preferred the story and atmosphere from the first game. Dead Space 1 had a very Alien vibe to it, with claustrophobic set pieces, dark corridors, and the unknown.  The second game just couldn't reproduce the same scares and surprises, which is of no real fault of its own.  We already knew about the Necromorphs and how to kill them, we know about Unitology, and we know about the Marker.  Things get more fleshed out in Dead Space 2 but there wasn't enough story progression as I wanted nor as much as there was in Dead Space 1. Dead Space 2 felt much more a set up for Dead Space 3.  Being more of a personal journey for Issac and a way for him to exercise his demons (mostly his guilt about Nicole) so that he can be a complete bad-ass in the next one.  All in all a great addition to the Dead Space mythology, but just not quite as amazing as the first game. (http://www.the2bitgamers.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/dead_space2-1024x576.jpg) The funny thing about DS2 that usually is a complaint for most sequels is that the gameplay is virtually unchanged.   You carry up to 4 weapons that are allocated to the digital pad, you have two melee attacks, stasis and kinesis return along with most of the weapons.  Aiming is still the tried and true Resident Evil 4 over the shoulder point of view; and the best way to kill those pesky Necromorphs is to dismember them, which is still as entertaining as it was the first time.  What made it outstanding was the small improvements in the execution.  Everything seemed to move so much easier, more fluid.  I felt that the aiming was faster and the overall gameplay was polished.  Kinesis was something I used way more in Dead Space 2 and it is fully leveled up when you get it. Plus there are plenty of items laying around ready to impale any nechromorph that comes in your way. To truly experience a Final Fantasy game you must first become familiar with the world in which Square Enix has created. While the overall fiction is very interesting the way that it is presented is confusing and disjointed. Bits and pieces of the story are given through the typical villainous diatribes and unique LOST-esc flashbacks, though the main meat of the information is given through dozens of “datalogs” within your menu. This may be great for people who want to read and engross themselves in the world of FF13 but I fear most people will rely too heavily on the spoken narrative and miss out on the majority of the awesome content. Through the first few hours of the game you’re slowly introduced to each of the six main protagonists: Lighting, Snow, Sazh, Hope, Vanille and Fang. Each character has their own specific drive that pushes them through the game. Lighting in particular is driven by the fact that her sister, who happens to also be Snow’s fiancée, has become a l’Cie. It is obvious that Square’s intention was to focus (no pun intended) on the characters themselves and let the worlds of Cocoon and Pulse act as set pieces. I applaud their attempt at trying something different but sadly they fall short on both accounts. Just when you start to get interested in each character, they all gear up to save the world and their back stories fall to the wayside leaving some conclusions a bit underwhelming. Delivery, tone and timing all sound great. The script on the other hand, makes the characters seem overly dramatic and whiney. As in every Final Fantasy game, the Orchestral and synthetic music complement the look and feel of the game though I did miss the traditional victory song at the end of every battle. To make up for it I found myself playing it in my head after every battle.. Duh duh-duh-daaa dooo-dooo dah-da-daaaaaa! Hrrmmm, excuse me. Leveling in the game is similar to the Sphere Grid of FFX. You’re given levels of what’s called a Crystalarium. By fighting in battles you earn CP which you can use to purchase new abilities and upgrades further advancing your characters. There are no actual levels and each character develops differently depending on their specific Crystalarium roles and the choices you make while spending your CP. I welcomed the change as it adds a bit of freedom and control when developing your characters. First the former. Yes, 2/3s of the main game is very linear to the point that the map is unnecessary. It plays out much like your typical action game. You start at point A, work your way to point B, with a few off-shoots in between to collect the random treasure sphere. But here’s the thing, I don’t care! One of my major gripes with the JPRG genre as a whole is the tedious fetch-quests that not only distract you from the main game, but end up being completely pointless as the game progresses.
